March 31, 1985. Madison Square Garden in New York City. Vince McMahon knew that he had to top Jim Crockett's successful Starrcade pay per view two years earlier. So what did Vince McMahon do? He started WrestleMania! Alright, alright. Enough of the BS, let's get to the chase! WrestleMania was the answer to Jim Crockett's Starrcade Pay per view. Vince McMahon started cross promotion with MTV (not exactly a match made in heaven; will reference that note later). Celebrities like Cyndi Lauper, Muhammad Ali, and Liberace made appearances leading up to the event, and even appearing at WrestleMania. Nine matches were made at the event; two of which were title matches (one being the Intercontinental title, and the other being the tag team titles). Speaking of which, both matches were pretty good, but both had very weak endings (especially the Intercontinental match). The match that was truly the highlight was the match between Andre the Giant (undefeated at the time) vs Big John Studd in a Body Slam match where Andre placed his career on the line; while John placed $15,000 (1985 money; imagine the pay if this match took place today), making this the first stipulation match. Both men had a lot at stake (especially Andre), and both were up to the challenge. You have to watch the match to see it for yourself. Overall, this WrestleMania one could say is a start of things to come, but a mix of mediocre and solid matches could be thought of as a lesson of how to make next year's event better. On a scale of 1 to 5, this gets a 3.
Before you guys says start lashing at me for watching professional wrestling, hear me out. I don't watch much TV now a days because there isn't a whole lot to watch, so the next best thing is to watch DVDs (or YouTube) of old professional wrestling matches (and I do mean *ahem* good wrestling matches). With that off my chest, let the review commence. Note: This is based on the WrestleMania anthology DVD set. Now I won't be reviewing ALL 21 (yep, that's how many DVDs there are in the set (22 in the re-release) in a single review, because I would be spending all day on this, nor will I be reviewing individual matches (but will highlight the best match(es) should the review and I cross paths). And I'll do my best to keep to spoiler free (which I can't promise, but will try).
You know, I've been around this super highway called the internet, and something has come to my attention: I've NEVER made a blog before. Say what you want, but when it comes to saying whatever is on my mind, I'm not afraid to speak it. My blogs will contain non video game reviews (already getting paid to do so with Examiner.com), stuff that's been heavy on my mind for quite some time, or anything else non video game review related. If you want to comment, feel free to do so, but keep it professional, and keep it clean. Who knows? You might even get a response from me.
